Every summer the O'Neill Regional Park threads light up with the same panic and I want to gently push back. We built here, in their canyon, on their creek. The coyotes working the wash behind Trabuco Oaks aren't invading anything, they're doing what they've done since long before the first cul-de-sac went in. That doesn't mean careless, it means responsible. Keep cats indoors, walk dogs on a six-foot leash and off the flexi, bring in the fallen avocados and the kibble bowl, and if one gets bold, make yourself huge and loud until it moves off. Do that and they stay wary of us, which is exactly what keeps everybody safe. Sharing this canyon is the deal we signed when we moved up here.

Aram, this is the whole thing right here — "we're the ones setting the table." I'm over in Laguna and it was the same story with our fallen avocados; the coyotes were coming for the rats the fruit drew, not us. One tip to add to yours: motion-sensor sprinklers near the trash side. Cheap, and they keep that commuter route respectful without anyone getting hurt. Thank you for the thirty years of watching.
