Trying to get ahead of my own nerves here. We've had a coyote working the greenbelt behind Sienna Botanica the last couple weeks, usually right around dawn when I'm walking Biscuit (our beagle) before the Oso Grande drop-off rush. It hasn't done anything — just trots the treeline and keeps its distance — but Biscuit is 22 pounds and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't watching the whole time. What's the realistic move here? Shorter leash and different route, or am I overthinking a coyote that's honestly just minding its own business?

You're not overthinking it, that dawn window is exactly when I white-knuckle our morning walk too. What actually helped me was swapping the retractable for a 6-foot fixed leash so my dog stays right at my side, and keeping a little air horn clipped to the leash handle — never had to use it but I feel less jumpy just having it.

Honestly a coyote that keeps its distance and moves along is doing exactly what we want it to — that's the version of coexistence we're hoping for, not the one to worry about. Keeping Biscuit close on that fixed leash is the right instinct, and if it ever does drift toward you, standing tall and being loud usually sends it right back to the treeline where it wants to be anyway.
