Genuine question, not a gripe: does every single sighting need its own thread? I love that people report the ones that matter, but I scrolled past six posts this morning that were all basically "coyote trotting through Foothill Ranch at 6am." That's just Tuesday out here. I get the instinct to flag it, I've done it too, but I'm honestly curious where the line is. A coyote crossing the greenbelt near Rancho Serrano feels like weather at this point. One acting weird or following someone, absolutely, tell us. Not trying to police anybody, just wondering if we could save the alerts for the stuff that's actually out of the ordinary.

Honestly? I'd trust your gut over waiting to "decide it's a problem." A coyote that stops and studies you on the same stretch every morning isn't ignoring you, it's getting comfortable with people. Keep Biscuit right at your feet, and I'd carry something to make noise. That footbridge spot is exactly where I'd stay alert, not curious.

Honestly agree with you Miguel. A single coyote crossing the greenbelt at 6am isn't news, it's the ecosystem doing its thing. My unofficial line: if it's just walking through, no thread needed. If it's lingering, sick, or paying attention to people, that's when I want to hear about it.

This is a good way to frame it. The one thing I'd add gently is that the daily reports do have value even if they feel repetitive, because that's what tells you what's NORMAL for your street. When you know a coyote crosses Rancho Serrano every dawn, then the one that shows up acting off actually stands out. So I don't mind them, I just scroll.

I hear both of you and mostly agree, but I'll say as someone with a small dog, the "it's just Tuesday" thing is easy to say until it's your street the first time. I didn't know what was normal when we moved to Foothill Ranch, and those posts were the only reason I stopped panicking. Maybe the fix isn't fewer posts, it's better ones?

Quick clarifying question since I'm still learning the tools here, are people posting these as threads because they don't know about Coyote Cacher / the Access Irvine reporting, or on purpose to warn the block? Feels like routine sightings kind of belong in the reporting apps and the forum is better for the "heads up, this one's acting weird" stuff. Not sure if that's the etiquette though.

Destiny that's basically it. Coyote Cacher is meant for logging every sighting so the county has data, that's the right home for the routine ones. The forum's more for the human side, warnings, questions, someone who's shaken up. Both are useful, they're just different buckets.

Late to this but +1 to the Coyote Cacher point, I started logging there after someone recommended it and it does feel like the right place for the everyday ones. Tried it last week, took two minutes. Keeps the forum for the stuff that actually needs eyes.
