One trotting along the Jeffrey Open Space trail near Trabuco just now, about 4:15. Not in a hurry, didn't seem bothered by the bikes going past. Cool to actually watch one move through — it cut back into the brush by the footbridge. Nothing dramatic, just passing it along in case you're out there this afternoon.

Welcome, Amber. Honestly that sounds pretty ordinary to me — a coyote that watches for a second and trots off is keeping its distance, which is what you want. I'm the anxious type here (I've got a dog and I still get jumpy), so I asked around: the shift to watch for is one that doesn't leave — lingers, follows you, comes toward you, or shows up in daylight totally unbothered by people. That's when folks say report it to OC Animal Care. Dusk near a canyon trailhead is basically their commute.
