We walk our beagle, Mochi, along the Jeffrey Open Space Trail near Northwood every morning around 6, and for the third time this week there's been a coyote just standing at the edge of the greenbelt watching us. Not running off. Just watching. There's a preschool drop-off two blocks from that stretch and I keep thinking about the little kids. I've read the hazing advice here and I've tried the arm-waving and the shouting, and this one does not care — it takes a few steps back and settles right back down. I don't think "haze it and coexist" is a real answer when the animal has clearly figured out we're all bluff. I've already emailed our HOA asking what it takes to get the city or a trapper out there before someone's dog or a kid gets hurt.

The bold ones that just watch you are the ones that worry me too — we have one on the trail behind Crown Valley that does the exact same thing at dawn and the arm-waving does nothing anymore. I don't think you're overreacting asking the city; a coyote that's lost its fear near a preschool is a different situation than the ones that bolt, and I'd rather the HOA push for removal than wait for an incident.
