Little thing I've been trying to figure out. My spaniel Waffles and I do the same loop most mornings through the Harbor Point trail behind the Dana Point library, usually right around 6:30 before it gets busy. Twice this week there's been a single coyote sitting way out in the dry grass off the path — not moving toward us, just watching, then it trots off when we get closer. It doesn't feel aggressive, but I honestly don't know if sitting-and-watching is normal coyote behavior or something I should read into. I keep Waffles leashed and we just keep walking. Curious how others read that kind of thing.

I've been wondering the same about the watching thing on my Irvine walks, so I don't have a firm answer for you either. From what I've been reading lately it sounds like that sit-and-observe posture is pretty typical and more about them keeping tabs than sizing you up, but I'd genuinely love if someone who knows more weighed in. Keeping Waffles leashed is the part I always see mentioned, so at least that instinct sounds right.
