Been reading up on the food-waste angle since the group by Serrano Creek has gotten busier, and one thing stuck with me: the state guidance basically says a coyote that never finds a handout stays wary of us, and a wary coyote is exactly the neighbor you want. The trouble spots are the boring ones — fallen avocados and figs left on the ground, pet food on patios, trash out the night before pickup. Fruit under the trees near the Serrano Creek trailhead is a big one this time of year. None of it takes much. Rake the drops, feed pets indoors, wait for morning to roll the cans out. Keeps them doing their actual job of thinning the rabbits and ground squirrels instead of learning our cul-de-sacs.
