Practical question for the Turtle Rock crowd. We walk our beagle, Biscuit, on the Bommer Canyon loop most mornings before I drop the kids at Bonita Canyon Elementary, and lately there's been a coyote sitting up on the ridge just watching us around 6:45. It doesn't approach, but Biscuit is 22 pounds and I'll be honest, my stomach drops every time. Our HOA sends out the generic "keep pets leashed" email and that's about it. For those of you who actually walk the same trails at that hour, what do you do differently, short leash and keep moving, or is there a better routine? I want to keep walking there, just want to feel less on edge about it.

The short leash (6ft, not the retractable) made the biggest difference for us, our dog stopped ranging out to the edges and the coyote lost interest. One sitting on the ridge watching is usually just keeping tabs on its space rather than sizing Biscuit up, but I still totally get the stomach drop, I do the same on our Ladera trails.

For what it's worth, that ridge-sitting at dawn seems to be pretty standard, I've seen the same near me around the same hour and it's usually gone by 7:30 once the joggers pick up. I've been trying to learn what counts as normal watching versus something to actually flag, so I'm curious what the trail regulars say too.
