Walking my son down to the bus stop near Rockfield and Peachwood this morning and a coyote came out of the greenbelt behind us. Not running off, not curious-and-gone — it just kept pace with us at maybe thirty feet, and when I stopped it stopped. I put myself between it and my kid and did the whole wave-my-arms-and-yell thing and it backed up a little but didn't leave until the bus actually pulled up. My hands were not steady after. I know they live here and I'm honestly not looking to villainize the thing. But something about it not breaking off felt different from the usual trot-across-the-street sightings I've read about here. Is that a normal thing this time of year, or is this one getting too comfortable with people? Trying to figure out whether I overreacted or whether the 7:20 walk needs to change for a while. Reporting it on Coyote Cacher either way.

Welcome, and I'm right there with you as a fellow newbie. I'm also on the trails around Mission Viejo and still figuring out what's normal versus alarming. From what I've gathered so far, one just watching from a distance is apparently pretty typical coyote behavior, not a stalking thing. Picking Biscuit up seems reasonable to me for an eleven-pounder. Curious what the more experienced folks say about the dusk timing though — that part I don't know yet.
