Trying to figure out what's "normal" for our stretch of Ladera. Walking our beagle Biscuit on the trail behind Founders Park a little after 6am, and lately there's been a coyote on the ridge that just... watches us go by. Doesn't approach, doesn't run off either. Same spot two or three mornings this week. I'm not alarmed exactly, just genuinely not sure whether that's routine coyote behavior or the kind of thing I should be adjusting my walk around. What's the read from folks who've been at this longer than me?

That watching-from-a-distance thing is pretty typical, especially near a den or a regular travel route at dawn. Since Biscuit's small, I'd keep him leashed and close on that stretch and maybe carry the walk a little later once the sun's fully up. A coyote keeping its distance and just clocking you is actually the behavior we want to keep intact.

Two or three mornings in the same spot is exactly how it starts, and 'just watching' is how they size up a small dog. I'd stop walking Biscuit there at that hour entirely and I'd let the HOA know so they can call it in. Hazing didn't do a thing on our side of San Clemente.

The same-spot pattern is what would get in my head too, so I get why you're asking. If it helps, I started bringing a shake can on my early Mission Viejo walks and keeping my little one on a short leash right next to me, and it took the edge off for me even on the mornings I see one. Would love to hear what you settle on.
