If you walk the loop around Laguna Niguel Regional Park in the evening, do yourself a favor and drop a couple small pebbles or coins in an empty water bottle before you head out. Carry it in your hand, not your bag. If a coyote gets curious and holds its ground near the lake trail, shake it hard and step toward it while you yell and wave your arms big. Nine times out of ten they remember they'd rather not deal with you and trot off toward the brush. The whole point is to keep them wary of people, which is what keeps everybody, coyotes included, out of trouble. Give them room, keep the dog on a short leash on that stretch, and you almost never have an issue.
