Quick tip for anyone walking the O'Neill Regional Park loops or the trails off Trabuco Creek: carry a cheap shaker can. Handful of pennies in an empty La Croix, tape over the top, clip it to your bag. If a coyote holds its ground and eyes your dog, shake it hard and wave your free arm up big while you back away facing it. Sounds silly but it works way better than yelling alone. The point isn't to scare them off the land, it's just to keep that healthy little distance both directions so we can keep sharing the canyon. Been doing this on my morning walks near Trabuco Oaks for years and the ones I see now give me plenty of room.
