Trying to get comfortable with the coyote that's been working the greenbelt behind Northwood, near the Hicks Canyon trail. I walk our beagle, Biscuit, there around 6:30 before it gets hot, and twice this week one has trailed us at maybe forty feet, not aggressive, just... there. Biscuit's on a six-foot leash the whole time. My kid walks to Canyon View for the bus around the same hour. I don't want to overreact and I don't want to swap trails forever — what actually works for keeping a little more distance when one's clearly curious? Our HOA sends out the generic "don't feed wildlife" email and that's about it.

Forty feet and just watching is usually the resident one keeping tabs, not stalking — mine does the same on the Aliso Creek path. The thing that changed it for me was carrying a little shaker can and actually using it the second one settles in to watch, instead of standing there hoping it moves on. Short leash like you've got is exactly right, don't let Biscuit range.

The school-hour overlap is the part that would nag at me too. When my daughter walked to Ambuehl I had her go with one other kid and keep talking — coyotes give a wide berth to noise and a group, it's the quiet solo pass they'll shadow. Might be worth asking your HOA to time the sprinkler cycle earlier so the greenbelt isn't the coolest spot right at 6:30.
