Pulled our little dog off the path twice this week on the Serrano Creek trail behind Rancho Cañada Elementary. Same coyote both mornings, right around 6:30, just standing in the brush watching us walk. My kids catch the bus at that corner. I've asked our HOA (Serrano Highlands) to look into removal because I don't think "wave your arms and yell" is a real plan when there's an animal that clearly isn't scared of people anymore.

That corner by the school would put me on edge too, honestly. We started walking our dog on a short leash and picking routes with more open sightlines after a scare in Irvine, and it helped my nerves at least — the coyote not backing off is the part I'd want the city to hear about.

The 6:30 timing lines up with what we see in Mission Viejo — they're most active right around dawn and dusk. Could you shift the morning walk even 30-40 minutes later past first light? Not a fix, I know, but it's cut our encounters down to almost none while we figure out the bigger stuff.

The standing-and-watching one would unsettle me more than one that ran off. If the HOA does log it, it'd help all of us to know whether anyone's been feeding near that greenbelt, since that's usually what makes them this comfortable — I'd genuinely want to rule it out for our own trail here.
