My teenager swears he saw a coyote trotting down the sidewalk on Sand Canyon near the Quail Hill loop around 2 in the afternoon yesterday, just casually in full sun. I always thought they were a dawn/dusk thing, so is a middle-of-the-day sighting actually normal, or does it mean something's off with that one? Not trying to panic, I'd just like to know how to read it before I decide whether to change my kids' walking route to the park.

Two mornings watching you, standing its ground at 6 a.m. and not flinching — that's a coyote that's already lost its fear of people. You're not silly. Whistles and sticks are fine, but I'd report it to Irvine Animal Care and OC Vector Control with dates and times. A little terrier at dawn is exactly what they target. Keep Frijol on a short leash, not the retractable, and honestly I'd drive the kids those two blocks until it's gone.
