Following up from the thread a couple weeks back where someone said to just make yourself big and loud instead of freezing up. Got to try it Sunday around 6:45 near the lake by Central Park RSM, one trotted out of the landscaping on the paseo maybe 30 feet off. Did the arms-up, stepped toward it, said a firm loud "hey" and it just reconsidered and looped back into the brush. No drama. Honestly I was more curious than scared once it was over, it clearly wanted nothing to do with me. So thanks to whoever posted that, wanted to close the loop. Still not totally sure if that's the move every time or if I just got a mellow one, but it worked here.

I'm new to all this too, so no expertise here, but I've read that a coyote watching without running isn't automatically "bold" — early mornings on quiet greenbelts they just don't feel pressured, and they're naturally curious. From what I gather the thing to actually watch for is one that follows or approaches, not just holds its ground. Sounds like you're already asking the right question before jumping to conclusions.
