Welcome, Vahe — and honestly, thank you for posting this, because I've wondered the same thing. I'm still new to all of it, so I'm reading more than I know. The "haze them" advice always leaves me with the same question you have: what does that actually look like at 5:45 in the dark? Would love to hear what people carry too. The following-you-and-Ziggy part is the piece I'd want to understand better before I said anything confident.

That's the Talega side of Ridgeline, right? Saw one on the same stretch last week around the same time. They den up in the open space behind there. Short leash was the right call, Vahe.

Thanks for the heads up. One thing that helped me when I moved down here from SJC — if one doesn't spook, don't freeze and watch it. Make yourself big, wave your arms, yell. Letting them get comfortable around people is how we end up with the bold ones.

7:40 and not spooking at a person is already a comfortable one. That's not "gave it room," that's a coyote that's stopped caring you're there. Report it on Coyote Cacher so the city actually has it on record, otherwise nothing gets done until something happens.

A coyote trotting a trail at dawn and not bolting the second it sees you isn't a red flag, Jian, that's just Tuesday. They live there. Ridgeline runs right through their range. Yuki's got it right — a little hazing keeps them wary and everyone stays fine. Reporting a normal sighting doesn't get anyone "dealt with."

Genuine question since I'm over in Dana Point and newer to all this — is a morning one heading toward houses something to worry about, or is that just them moving between the canyon and wherever? Not trying to panic, just want to know what's normal.

Danielle, morning and evening are their normal commute hours, and yeah they'll cut through neighborhoods to get between green space. Keeping the cat in on a sighting day like Vahe did is the move. And +1 on logging it on Coyote Cacher — not because this one did anything, just so the pattern's there. Doesn't have to mean removal, Jian, it's mostly a map.

Tried the big-and-loud thing on one at Talega last fall and it turned right around, so can confirm it works. Didn't feel graceful doing it but who cares.
