Trying to figure out a routine that actually works. Most mornings I walk our little cavapoo, Biscuit, on the trail behind Wagon Wheel around 6:30 before I drop the kids at the elementary school, and lately I've seen a coyote sitting up on the ridge near the arroyo watching us. It hasn't come close, and honestly it looks more curious than anything, but Biscuit is 12 pounds and I'd rather not find out. What time of day are people actually running into them around Coto? And is a short leash plus one of those coyote-vest things overkill, or is that what the rest of you are doing? Our HOA sent a general email but it was pretty vague, so I'm coming to the people who actually walk these trails.

For what it's worth, the ridge-sitting-and-watching thing seems pretty common from what I've been reading and seeing over here in RSM too, especially around den season in spring. I don't have a strong read on the vest yet, so I'll be curious what the folks who've used one say.

That watching-from-a-distance posture is honestly a good sign in my experience, David, and a 6-foot fixed leash goes a long way for a little one like Biscuit. If you want to feel more prepared, keeping the mornings a bit less predictable (varying your route and timing) tends to work with the coyote's natural caution rather than against it.

I've wondered the same thing about the vests, so I'll be following this. From what I can tell so far the dawn and dusk hours are when most people around Lake Forest mention seeing them, which lines up with your 6:30 sightings.
